Basic Home Maintenance & Repairs during Winter months.

Following these maintenance tips, you’ll be able to save yourself time and money in the long run. When the snow and ice clear in the spring, you’ll be happy to see that your property still looks and functions great.

  • Flush the water heater – Flushing your water heater system helps to control the build-up of mineral deposits which will result in a more efficient heater. It is recommended that you do this every 2 years.

  • Service oil or gas heater – Cleaning of your furnace annually is a service that varies upon your system but one that is an absolute necessity. It is your effective way to ensure a worry free year of operation.

  • Check for peeling paint – Check outside walls to see if there are signs of paint peeling or blistering on any part of the building. Whenever exterior painting of a building is peeling, it may be that the existing paint coating is failing and not protecting the building siding. Leaving this problem unfixed could lead to more damages and expensive repairs in the future. Common cause could be that the paint was applied over a dirty surface; which is almost guaranteed to peel or crack down the road.

  • Check for defects or replace old water heater – Regular maintenance of your water heater will extend the life. If you have an old water heater in your home, it is best to check for any defects, repair or replace it if necessary. If your water heater is leaking or not heating up, you may be able to repair it rather than replace it. If the water heater is more than 10 years old and it has leaks around the base of the tank, works erratically or not at all; it’s probably time for replacement.

  • Inspect the roof – An annual roof inspection is key to ensuring that your property stays in good condition and that it can withstand the winter weather such as wind and ice/snow.

  • Trim the trees and landscape – Tree trimmings and landscaping can be done prior to the winter to avoid any fall off or to help keep the attractiveness of your property at an all-time high.

  • Inspect & clean your chimney – It is highly recommended to have your chimney checked and cleaned every year as failing to do this could be dangerous and hazardous to your health and the entire people living in the house. This should be done by a professional to prevent potential disaster.

  • Clear and clean gutters – A simple gutter cleaning before the winter will help you avoid any further damage that may be done to your property caused by the build-up of snow or ice.
