Mandrake (mandragora) is a well known plant through human history. One of the first mentions of them appears in the Bible and because of the context they appear on they have been traditionally considered a remedy to women’s infertility problems.

In Roman times it was used by its narcotic and sedative properties. And in Medieval times they thought that digging them out would kill you and gave tips in order to avoid a certain death. It was used at the time for magic and spell purposes and they thought it had aphrodisiac properties.
