House Tours Tuesdays

Today in House Tours Tuesdays: we continue bringing you our favourite entries from the Small Cool 2012 contest in Apartment Therapy and we add a small urban apartment rented by a builder in Hollywood.

This is a small apartment of just 450 sq. feet (41.80 sq. metres) and that includes the patio. What we like about this apartment is the use of colour. Usually in these small apartments people tend to shy away from dark colours and go for the usual light colours, but this apartment proves that a well chosen dark colour wisely used around will work very well. And I’m not saying that just because it’s a chocolate brown. 😉

Chocolate brown can work as a neutral and mixed with other bright colours and lighter ones such as cream is going to create a very calm cozy space. Great if you don’t have lots of windows to get natural light in such as in this case. Plenty of artificial light sources help to avoid any issues caused by the lack of natural light. And thanks to the patio he can get as much outside time in the summer as he wants.

The rest of the apartment is full of nicely chosen furniture completing the look. Jump to the article to read more and see all the photos.

Another great apartment in a very small and awkward space. And it surprisingly manages to have 2 bedrooms in such a small space.

The apartment is 325 sq. feet (30.20 sq. metres) and it manages to have two double bed bedrooms making use of any space as living space. In what it would have been the corridor, the created the living room/kitchen/dining area as you can see in the photo above. Well chosen pieces to avoid obstructing movement along with a nice decoration help to avoid any claustrophobic feeling and make the space very dynamic and fluid.

It’s an incredibly well laid out apartment and it’s certainly worth reading the article and seeing all the photos.

Our next apartment is bigger and lighter. It’s 675 sq. feet (62.71 sq. metres) so it feels huge when you compare it with the previous two. It also has plenty of natural light going in but it feels incredibly bright and summery thanks to the use of light colour and white painted furniture.

We like the colour, very summery and light, but we also like the use of open plan living creating a living room/ kitchen area that makes the whole place feel very spacious. Much bigger than it actually is. In order to separate the areas, they have a breakfast bar that increases the storage and working space in the kitchen and allows more light in. And of course we like the beautiful wood flooring going around all around the apartment.

Our last Small Cool 2012 apartment is 580 sq. feet (53.88 sq. metres) in Port Melbourne, Australia. As the first two apartments of today, it has a strange shape although not as difficult one to work as the second one. But still they have managed to fit things quite nicely a make good use of the space.

In this case, as in the previous one, they have open plan living room/kitchen making the place look bigger and again a breakfast bar is used to separate visually the two spaces. In this case they also opted for different flooring as the living room had carpet and that type of flooring is not very practical in a kitchen. They also used different wall treatments: the living room has a beautiful wallpaper in contrast with the paint in the kitchen and dining areas.

It’s a great apartment with beautiful wall treatments and patterns. Jump to the article to read more and see all the photos.

Our final article is not an entry in the Apartment Therapy Small Cool 2012 contest. But it’s still a small apartment with beautiful colour and nice urban decoration.

The apartment belongs to Kevin Mincin, a set builder and as you can see his is really good at doing spaces. Very urban in nice blue colour contrasting with the white painted furniture, and the natural tones of the wood flooring. The blue has a bit of grey which actually makes it a bit neutral and helps to mix it with other bright colours.

It’s a very beautiful apartment with a nice urban and modern style on it. And the accessories are very nicely chosen.
